Hi Bloggy World!
I am struggling. About 1/2 to 2/3 of my class is struggling with reading. I have about 7 students that are really not catching on to reading, and I am worried. These are 2nd graders and they should be able to read. There are about 7-10 students in my class of 23 that are reading under 25 words a minute with a lot of mistakes. I am doing guided reading groups, but I really want to make it meaningful. If you have any suggestions at all please leave a comment or send me an email. My email address is on the side.
Some of the things I am doing are 1st grade approaching level readers for my lowest group, and some regular 1st grade level readers to build confidence. Also, I am practicing sight words, doing word sorts, and some sounding out word activities. I really want all of my students to succeed, and it is very hard when some are not able to read the basic work. My school is lucky enough to be using lexile reading program, and they really enjoy that. I just want to make sure I am doing everything I can for my wonderful little friends.

ReplyDeleteit sounds like you are doing all the right things, sight words, guided reading, easy readers to work on fluency etc. Have you had a look at Daily 5 or do you use it already? I started this year in my 2/3 class and my lowies did start to pick up. I still have 3 that need extra attention but Daily 5 helped me organise and track those kiddos alot better than I was.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Tania, I think you're doing all the right things. I teach first grade and I'm doing the same thing. Every morning I review sight words and a blend with my first graders on the smart board. I then have my students write the words or a sentence on their whiteboard. They then have to get up and walk around the room and ask students in our classroom what the sight words are on their whiteboard. This helps them to write it and read it several times. I also do Shared reading with my first graders EVERY DAY!! It gets old but I really think it helps. But all I can really say is keep up the good work! They will improve.

I love the asking other students what sight word they have written. I will definitely be trying that on Monday. :) Its just hard when they are getting frustrated and I am trying to build up their confidence and they don't have home support.

ReplyDeleteI too agree you are doing the right stuff.Question for you...are these kids eating breakfast? Sometimes I ask the cafeteria for the left over cereals and let the kids munch on dry cereal during small group, or while they are writing in their journals,,sometimes it helps with concentration???
Do they get to pick out books by interest? OR if you know their interests go find books on their level with the topics they like, hook them into it anyway you can!

My school offers free breakfast for the students everyday which is nice. My school is around 97% free and reduced lunch, and so the free breakfast really helps.
DeleteI do let them pick out books of interest and that really helps and it is nice because they actually want to read, but just aren't.
